The Altai

Exploration in Southern Siberia, 9th-28th August 2012

George and Clay discover some rock worth cragging at just a few minutes walk from basecamp.

Routes

We attempted six Alpine routes, and successfully completed all but one of them. In addition, we also completed two other routes which were more like easy scrambles/hikes.

Route Rough Grade Date Climbers
Un-named 3706m peak F+ 15th August GA, CC
Un-named 3608m peak PD 15th August GC, ED
N face to 3716m peak (not completed) 17th August GC, CC
Irbistu (3967m) SW ridge F 17th August GA, ED
Irbistu (3967m) N ridge AD (III) 19th August GC, CC
Dzhaniktu (3942m) N ridge PD+ 21st August GC, CC, ED

All routes have been graded as best as we can. However, all rock routes presented significant and continuous objective dangers in the form of loose and crumbling rock under hand and foot. All major difficulties on rock were soloed without leader placed protection.

In addition, we also climbed three new (short) single pitch trad routes at a crag a short walk from the campsite.
